Welcome to my website! My name is Bas van der Veen and I am an enthusiastic Drupalista. Read more about Drupal here. I work as a software developer for IT companies, universities and non-profit organisations, maintaining many complex applications in various programming languages, such as PHP, python, C++ and Uniface.
Since 2013 I have lived alternately abroad, Amsterdam and now Groningen. In 2019, I lived in Leipzig, where I worked for Extinction Rebellion and learned the technology and concepts behind data science - both to help build a sustainable future for our world.
I studied archaeology at Leiden University. In recent years I have travelled a lot and often lived abroad: I lived in Leipzig, Dresden, Ghent and Tbilisi. For a blue Monday I studied Arabic, I learned German in Dresden Neustadt and started to learn Russian in Tbilisi. Deciphering a foreign language is very similar to figuring out software code. Apart from being an avid cyclist and traveller, I am also a volunteer at festivals (such as noorderzon now). I love mountains; I skied in the Alps in my youth, hiked in the mountains in Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Sicily, Poland, Portugal, England, Morocco, Colombia and South Africa, but I haven't had enough yet.
